The famine continued, so when the grain stores depletedIsrael knew his sons’ journey to Egypt must be repeatedJudah reminded his father they must bring their little brotherTo prove to Joseph that there was indeed another“Why did you bring this trouble on me?” Israel asked his sonsThey replied “We just simply answered the man's questions.”Then Israel said, “Take the man some gifts, if that’s how it must be.Some balm, some spices, some nuts, and honey.Return double the silver that was found in your sacksIt could have been a mistake perhaps.Go now, take your brother, Ben, tooAnd may God Almighty have mercy on you.”They took the gifts, the silver, young BenJoseph was pleased to see they had the boy with themJoseph told his steward “Prepare a meal soon.Escort them to my house. We dine at noon.”Joseph’s brothers were afraid that they might be killedBut when they met Joseph’s steward their fears were stilledThey apologized for the silver, that they returned with moreThat they did not know who put it in their sacks beforeThe steward reassured them, “Do not be afraid.Your God has put treasure in your sacks, it’s ok.”Simeon was brought out, they were given water to wash their feetAnd prepared the present for when Joseph came to eatWhen Joseph arrived they brought forth the presentBowed down low in a pose that was reverent“Is your father still alive?” Joseph inquiredThey replied, “He is well, not yet retired.”Then Joseph saw his brother, young BenWas overcome with compassion for himHe rushed out of the room as tears filled his eyesWent to his chambers so he could cryJoseph washed his face and, composed, came out“Serve the food!” he said with a shoutBut they did not eat with the brothers, the EgyptiansFor to eat with Hebrews was an abominationThey drank and were merry as Joseph’s honored guestsUnaware that Joseph had planned for them another test...
