David and Goliath

In the Valley of Elah, the Israelite army set up camp
To meet the Philistines who named Goliath as their champ

For forty days and nights the giant shouted out his cry
“Send a man to fight me! Your armies I defy!”

David, son of Jesse, arrived at the camp one day
Upon hearing Goliath’s speech, went to King Saul so he could say

“Send your servant, I will go and fight this man alone.”
Saul replied, “You’re just a boy, not even fully grown.”

The shepherd answered, “I’ve slain bears and lions in my time.
With the Lord God on my side the victory is mine.”

No armor, sword, or shield. Armed with just a staff and sling.
He picked up 5 smooth stones with which to fight the Philistine

As the two approached, Goliath spoke these words
“Come here boy, I’ll feed your body to the birds!”

David was not fearful, with confidence he said
“I’ll strike you down this very day and then cut off your head.

You come against me with a sword, a spear, and javelin,
But I come in the name of the Lord Almighty, I will win.”

David rushing forward grasped his trusty sling
Pulled a stone from in his bag and flung it with a ‘ZING!’

David’s aim was perfect as he loosed the stone to fly
Sailing through the air, it struck Goliath right between the eyes

The giant toppled forward, in the dirt lay face down dead
David took Goliath’s great big sword and chopped off the fierce man’s head

Indeed, the Lord was with him. He knew he would prevail.
The battle is the Lord’s and he will never let us fail
